Understanding and Managing Arousal Regulation, Big Emotions, and Behaviour in Young Children  Wednesday, March 5, 2025

This workshop will focus on the various factors that cause dysregulation, which often lead to big emotions and unexpected behaviours. Participants will learn methods for assessing the source of dysregulation and the underlying emotions that drive challenging behaviours. Participants will also explore tools and co-regulation strategies to help children manage their level of physiological arousal, their emotions and the expression of their emotions through more regulated and socially connected actions. 

Specific topics that will be covered include:

  • The neuroscience behind dysregulation.
  • The 6 threat responses.
  • The 8 sensory systems with emphasis on interoception.
  • The purpose of emotions: what are our emotions communicating to us and others?
  • The purpose of behaviour.
  • Emotion focused behaviour guidance tools.
  • Regulating tools used by occupational therapists for childcare and classroom settings.
  • Effective co-regulation strategies (regulation through relationships).
