Session 1: See a Child Differently, See a Different Child

Susan will kick off this 3 part workshop series by introducing the core
underpinnings of Shanker Self-Reg®, including the difference between stress
behaviour and misbehaviour, how deterministic/self-control thinking can introduce
more stress, the importance of co-regulation and relationships and the 5 Practicesof Self-Reg:
1. Read and reframe behaviour
2. Recognize stressors across the 5 domains: biological, emotion, cognitive,
social & prosocial
3. Reduce the stress load
4. Reflect – calm, listening, embodied awareness, reflection (CLEAR)
5. Restore energy, relationships, focus & hope

Session 2: ECEs On the Self-Reg Learning Journey

Wherever you are on your Self-Reg learning journey, there is always something we can do to support and improve the lives of the children in our care. In this session Susan will explore with examples, tools and strategies the different Self-Reg early childhood learning journeys that many of us are on and speak to practical steps that we can take today to incorporate Self-Reg into our early childhood centers. The Self-Reg journeys are:

1. Seeds – shifting from managing to understanding behaviour
2.  Sunrise – reframing “readiness” for learning in the early years and exploring
learning environments
3. Quilt – how Self-Reg supports quality pedagogy in the early years and
exploring play-based learning and inquiry

Session 3: Nurturing Self-Reg Havens

A Haven is not only a place. Havens are nurtured through our actions, through
people, our relationships and the spaces held between. In a Haven, everyone feels safe in every way: physically, neuroceptively, emotionally, socially and culturally. In a Haven, Self-Reg frames all and where values come before action plans. The safety and relationships found in a Haven unlock the child’s potential and learning can occur. In the final session, Susan will take a deep dive into applied Self-Reg and how we nurture a Haven, the final Self-Reg learning journey, using the WIRED acronym:

Resilience
Equity
Development
