Did you Know?

The Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA) has been amended:

Job Seeking Leave – A new leave of absence was established under the ESA that provides eligible employees with 3 unpaid days of leave if:

  • the employee received a notice of mass termination (when an employer terminates 50 or more employees at its establishment within a 4-week period)
  • the employee is engaging in activities related to finding employment, including job searches, interviews and training.

Eligible employees must notify their employer at least 3 days before beginning the leave, if possible.

Extended Temporary Lay-off

A new extended lay-off was established under the ESA to allow an employer and non-unionized employee to agree to and for the Director of Employment Standards to approve of, a temporary lay off that is 35 or more weeks in any period of 52 consecutive weeks but less than 52 week in any 78 consecutive weeks.
