Supervisors’ Connection – Implementing and Managing Bill 148 the Fair Workplaces & Better Job Act May 24, 2018
1:00pm – 4:00pm
Bill 148: The Fair Workplaces & Better Jobs Act came into force on January 1, 2018. The Act has made a significant number of changes to the Employment Standards Act (ESA) affecting all workplaces in Ontario, including child care organizations. This informal interactive seminar will provide organizations with an opportunity to assess the impact this legislation will have on your organization and identify strategies to deal with these changes.

Asha Rampersad from Bernardi HR Law will be joining us to provide answers from a legal perspective about how to best manage your child care centre; when introducing and implementing the changes into your workplace.

Our interactive three-hour seminar will focus on:

  • Dealing with the minimum wage increase and its impact on all staff salaries(not just those earning minimum wage)
  • As of April 1, 2018, how to deal with employee requests to review wages due to legislative changes surrounding equal pay for equal work (Employers will be required to respond by either providing a wage adjustment or a written explanation of the differential)
  • Identifying changes you need to think about when updating your job descriptions
  • Changes to public holiday pay and vacation entitlements
  • Understanding how the Personal Emergency Leave impacts other paid days off (sick, float, bereavement etc.)
  • How to manage the relationship with supply staff under the new ESA
  • Changes to other leave of absences entitlements
  • Increased penalties for organizations that do not meet the ESA standards beginning January 2018
  • New rights for employees to ask for a schedule or location change after three months of employment (Employees will have the right to refuse to accept last minute shift change requests without worrying about reprisals)
  • Reviewing which policies will need to be updated so that your organization remains compliant

Who should attend: Supervisors, Assistant Supervisors, Owners/Operators, Board of Directors, HR, and Executive Directors
